Guatemala
Antigua
Deep, resonant character grown in volcanic ash
Tasting Notes
Antigua sits in a valley ringed by three volcanoes in Guatemala — ash-rich soil gives its coffee a distinctive smoky character and a substantial body. This lot carries deep cocoa and dark chocolate, warm brown sugar and toasted bread through the middle, and finishes with a hint of cedar and tobacco.
Our lot comes from a historic estate in the Antigua Valley, grown at 1,500–1,700 masl, washed and then patio-dried in the sun. The mineral content of volcanic soil is what lets this coffee build such a deep chocolate character and full mouthfeel.
Why We Chose This Coffee
- 🔥 Smoky character: like standing next to a roastery — warm, deep and hard to put down
- 🍫 Dark chocolate: the concentrated cocoa of a 72% bar, with bitter and sweet in perfect balance
- 🏔️ Volcanic terroir: a microclimate between three active volcanoes gives every sip its distinct mineral edge
- Classic Central American profile: consistent quality that shows exactly what volcanic terroir can do
Brewing Recommendations
Pour-Over
- Grind: medium-coarse (raw sugar)
- Water: 90–93°C
- Ratio: 1:14
- Brew time: 2:45–3:15
A higher temperature draws out the chocolate sweetness — brew a little stronger for fuller body.
Espresso (Americano / Mocha)
- Grind: fine
- Yield: 36 ml in 28 seconds
- An americano brings out the smoke; a mocha doubles down on the chocolate
This one is outstanding as an americano — the smoke and chocolate stand out most in black coffee.
