Why We Only Do Delivery: The Thinking Behind Rhine Coffee
We don't have a storefront — not because we couldn't afford one, but because we chose to put the money into better coffee instead. The reasoning behind Rhine Coffee's delivery-only model.
Rhine Coffee is delivery-only because we believe good coffee doesn’t need expensive interior design to speak on its behalf. With no storefront, every dollar that would have gone into space goes into coffee instead — better beans, better equipment, better prices. This isn’t a compromise. We think it’s the leanest and most valuable way to run a coffee business.
What Does It Cost to Open a Café?
Start with the arithmetic. Opening a mid-sized café in Taiwan takes roughly this much up front:
| Item | Estimated cost |
|---|---|
| Deposit + rent | NT$50,000–150,000/month (more in prime districts) |
| Interior design and build-out | NT$800,000–2,000,000 |
| Equipment | NT$500,000–1,000,000 |
| Opening inventory | NT$100,000–200,000 |
| Staffing | NT$150,000–300,000/month |
| Total | NT$2,000,000–5,000,000+ |
Of that, build-out and rent account for more than 60% of the total.
Which raises the question we kept coming back to: does any of that money make the coffee taste better?
So Where Does the Money Go Instead?
Once there’s no storefront to pay for, we can:
Buy better beans
Our green coffee budget is 1.5–2× that of a café selling at the same price point. That lets us buy hand-selected high-altitude single-origin lots outright, instead of leaning on commodity-grade beans to keep costs down.
Invest in serious equipment
With no build-out budget competing for the money, we put it into the machines that actually change what ends up in the cup — a commercial espresso machine, temperature-controlled pour-over kettles, and dosing grinders.
Charge a fairer price
A specialty pour-over at a café usually runs NT$150–200. At Rhine Coffee, the same grade of cup is NT$110–120 — because your coffee isn’t quietly paying off someone’s rent and interior depreciation.
Doesn’t Delivery Compromise the Coffee?
This is the question we’re asked most, and the one we’ve put the most work into answering.
What we do
- Temperature management: insulated packaging keeps hot drinks in the right drinking range on arrival
- Packaging design: custom spill-resistant lids and a rigid carrier cut the risk of a knocked-over cup dramatically
- Timing: we’ve worked with the delivery platforms to streamline our workflow — five minutes on average from order to handoff
- Menu design: our menu is built around “delivery-friendliness” — iced drinks (cold brew, iced lattes) come through a delivery run essentially unchanged
Iced drinks are actually better suited to delivery
Which is exactly why our signature drinks — Rhine Sunset, Black Forest Cold Brew — are built cold. Iced coffee holds its flavor far more reliably in a delivery scenario than hot coffee does.
How Do You Build a Brand With No Storefront?
Conventional wisdom says people have to see something and touch it before they’ll trust it. But in 2026:
- Social is the storefront: Instagram and Facebook are our shopfront, and they never close
- The experience is the word of mouth: every cup that arrives is a point of contact with the brand
- Content is trust: sharing what we know about coffee on this blog is how we show our work
- Consistency is quality: no variation between baristas on different shifts, so every cup lands the same
We think the standard people use to choose a brand is shifting — from “does this place photograph well?” to “is this coffee good?”
What We’re Building
Rhine Coffee isn’t just trying to sell coffee. We’re trying to redefine how good coffee reaches you.
Coffee shouldn’t be something you have to make a trip for. It should flow into your day as naturally as water — at your desk, at your table, on your couch.
That’s why we’re called Rhine. The Rhine runs across Europe, threading together countless cities and cultures along the way. We’d like coffee to do the same: a river moving through the city, connecting people to the good part of an ordinary day.

FAQ
Is delivered coffee much different from drinking it in a café?
For iced drinks, there’s essentially no difference. Hot drinks lose a little heat, but our insulated packaging holds them at a good drinking temperature for 30 minutes. If temperature is your main concern, go with the iced range.
With no storefront, how do returns work?
If there’s a quality problem with what arrives — the drink is clearly wrong, it spilled, that sort of thing — you can request a refund through the delivery platform, or contact us directly. We stand behind every cup.
Will you open a physical store one day?
No plans right now. But we’re open to meeting people in an “experience space” format down the line — cupping workshops, origin talks, and the like.
